What to watch for at CFC Worldwide Short Film Fest 2010

For those of you in Toronto - or trekking there - CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival kicks off the summer season with an award-winning bang.

Their festival opens June 1 with the gala screening of award winners from around the world. The gala includes trophy grabbers from Sundance, Clermont-Ferrand, ImagiNATIVE, Aspen ShortsFest and the Cannes competitor NFB’s Runaway by Cordell Barker.

The week continues with a hearty calendar of ‘Official Selection’ screenings along with country salutes like Doris and onedotzero: NEW BRITISH TALENT '09. Doris showcases Sweden’s girl movie movement manifesto of female driven movie creation, while the Brit showcase comes from the smart folks at BBC tasked with eyeing new talent.

Thursday gives short movie lovers more competitive programs along with a salute to Mexican film schools, not to mention the gate driving Celebrity Shorts package (with the woefully misplaced Oscar®-winning The New Tenants and the 2010 Sundance Jury Winner Drunk History - starring Will Ferrell - tucked into this package - they should be in the opening night Gala.)

You’ll hear a lot about The Summer House - starring Robert Pattison - but it’s a pretty packed program with some noteworthy shorts.

The Slap 'n' Tickle program, which closes the late night on Thursday, is usually where the naughtiest – and funniest – new short films are found. Take an afternoon nap if you need to make it, but make sure you see this program.

Friday continues its competitions with a spotlight on Poland (a second is programmed for Saturday) along with a re-tread of the Celebrity Shorts in case you missed it the night before.

Saturday offers one of the most interesting programs – along with more competitive programming – and that’s the 10 year Retrospective of Quebec’s PRENDS ÇA COURT! Curated by Quebec’s king of shorts, Danny Lennon, this program will undoubtedly show off some of our country’s most memorable short films from masters of the medium.

If you can find your way into the Sunday award ceremony you’ll witness the crowning of some gems which may go on to even bigger prizes (hint: winners of this festival are eligible for Academy Award® nominations).

Amidst all of this, make time for the symposium which covers a veritable 'what’s what' of the world of short film production.

My demanding editor Liz Hover will cover the symposium scene shortly on this website and if you know what’s good for you, you’ll sign up for any and every event she mentions.

For those keeping track, I’ll be covering the who, what and where at the 2010 CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival over the next while.

Bring on the festival!
