"We're proud to run this program for a third year," said Susan Millican, CEO at the National Screen Institute. "One of the strengths of NSI New Voices is its ability to bring talented people face to face with industry professionals. Graduates of this program have gone on to find work with tremendous companies such as Buffalo Gal Pictures, Eagle Vision, Frantic Films and the Winnipeg Film Group."

The program begins in May and takes place in Winnipeg, Manitoba. There are a limited number of openings for non-Winnipeg residents. Out-of-town program participants are responsible for covering the costs of their accommodation and travel.

Participants will receive minimum wage during the program, which runs in two phases:

Phase 1 (skills development training) begins with a Spirit Day where spiritual leaders and participants come together for a sharing circle and talk about personal goals. The skills training is designed to deliver a well-rounded understanding of industry job requirements.

Phase 2 (work placement) provides an industry work setting for participants, opening them up to the creative and technical opportunities available.

The program will be co-managed by Lisa Meeches and Melissa Kajpust.

Lisa Meeches is President/Executive Producer of Meeches Video Production Inc./Eagle Vision Inc. and brings almost 20 years of experience in film and television and an essential Aboriginal perspective to the program.

Melissa Kajpust, an award-winning writer, has worked as a writer and director for both film and television, and has led workshops and courses for Film Training Manitoba, Red River College Continuing Education and the Manitoba Institute for Gifted Students.

Lisa and Melissa co-managed the original pilot project and also the 2006 NSI New Voices program.

NSI New Voices is funded in part by the Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development (CAHRD), NBC Universal, The Winnipeg Foundation, CTV, RBC Financial Group and the Aboriginal Media Educational Fund.
