Ryan Hanson

Ryan is a graduate of the Vancouver Film School’s Film Production program. In 2006, he was awarded Best Cinematographer at the BC Student Film Festival for his work on the film The Shade.

In 2009, Ryan wrote and directed the NSI Drama Prize short film The Curiosity of Penny Parker which has played at many festivals worldwide and was awarded first place in the KidsEye program at the 2009 Rhode Island International Film Festival. Penny Parker has also aired on CBC’s Northern Reflectionsprogram.

The Quarry is Ryan’s second short film and was awarded a production grant from the Ontario Arts Council. It is currently doing the festival circuit.

Right now, Ryan is in pre-production on his third short film, The Escapement, and is also in the script phase of his first feature, Lilium, which he wrote with Daniel Warth.

Paul Lachowich

Paul is a graduate of Algonguin College’s television broadcasting program. Beyond the two short films he directed during his time at college, Paul’s varied body of work has found him everywhere from shooting broadcast sports to directing and editing corporate videos.

About the cast

Jennifer Baker / Leigh/mother

After 15 years in the print/prepress media industry, Jennifer left it all behind to pursue a career in film. Well prepared with four years acting class under her belt, she signed with the Porter Group and has since landed two TV shows, seven short films, one independent feature and several commercials, print and internet gigs.

Steve Watts / Narrator

“Ohmigod, I just LOVE your accent!” is often the first thing Torontonians utter when Steve asks for something in a store. His British voice, finessed by 10 years with the BBC as a radio host in London, England is distinctive yet classless, warm yet dramatic. Since 2003, Steve’s dulcet tones have graced the Alliance Atlantis television network and BBC Canada on a daily basis.

Mandy O’Craven / Penny

With just under a year of film experience, Mandy has completed seven films (including five lead or principal roles) and a promotional spot for sleepovers at the Royal Ontario Museum. Mandy loves spending time on set and learning about all aspects of filmmaking. She especially loved filming The Curiosity of Penny Parker because it was fun working with Ellie and Reggie, the director’s two pugs, thumb-wrestling with the crew and getting piggy back rides from the director.
