Personal statement
Director J. Scott Portingale says:
"The story of Photosynthesis derived from a time lapse (with motion) shot that I wanted to wrap a story around. At the time I was working a full time job and attempting to write my first film for a 16mm workshop I was enrolled in. During this situational strain on my schedule I had forgotten to water the one and only house plant I own. The plant had wilted down to a state that I thought would have killed it, but I watered it anyway.
To my amazement, within two hours the plant was reaching for the ceiling. The quick recovery of this plant inspired the time lapse shot within the film, which in turn inspired the story surrounding it. Photosynthesis was born."

J. Scott Portingale
Having a background in industrial diving/welding, J. Scott Portingale was an unlikely candidate for the director’s chair. That was until 2006, when his passion for photojournalistic photography evolved into an appetite to tell stories with a cinematic voice. Scott’s films are marked with an explorative and whimsical tone that cultivates the imagination and suspends disbelief for audiences of all ages.
