What is NSI New Voices?
- Full-time, 14-week training for Aboriginal people in Manitoba, aged 18 to 35, interested in a film and television career.
- Teaching is in Winnipeg and space is limited for non-Winnipeg residents.
- Two phase training: classroom based then an industry internship.
- Students receive minimum wage for the full 14-week program.
- Culturally sensitive - training provides well-rounded understanding of job requirements in the industry.
- Aims to inspire young Aboriginal people by exposing them to a variety of creative and challenging employment opportunities.
Training is delivered by senior industry experts.

How much does it cost?
There are no tuition fees or hidden costs – applicants pay a nominal, one-off application fee. However, the program does provide a limited number of places for non-Winnipeg residents. If you live outside the city you must cover all travel and accommodation costs associated with attending the program in Winnipeg. The National Screen Institute is unable to subsidize any travel or accommodation for participants.
Who leads the NSI New Voices training program?
Ursula Lawson and
Sam Vint co-manage the program.
Lisa Meeches is the program advisor.
How is the training provided?
The program is 14 weeks full-time and takes place in Winnipeg. If you are selected for the program, you will receive minimum wage earnings throughout the training.
Phase one - skills development training (six weeks):
Skills development training includes workshops and seminars covering key employment areas in the film and television industry. Topics include: the process of storytelling through film and television, script development, writing styles for television and film, industry terminology and job positions. Producing, financing and marketing are also included.
Phase two - internship (eight weeks):
Participants who successfully complete phase one graduate to the internship. These participants then take an internship in an industry setting.
Who are the NSI New Voices program experts?
The NSI New Voices associate faculty is made up of experts from the Canadian film and television industry who generously share their experiences and knowledge with NSI New Voices participants.
