Applications are now being accepted for the National Screen Institute - Canada (NSI) Drama Prize training program 2007, presented nationally in part by CBC Television. The program offers emerging writers, directors and producers one year of professional training and the chance to develop and produce a short film for broadcast on CBC Television and for premiere at NSI FilmExchange Canadian Film Festival 2008.

“NSI Drama Prize is NSI’s longest running program. Over the years, it’s opened doors for some very talented Canadian filmmakers,” said Joy Loewen, Assistant Manager, NSI Drama Prize. “Through the program, Canadian writer-director, Gary Yates (7 Times Lucky, Niagara Motel) made Without Rockets which was short-listed for an Oscar®. Director, Michael Dowse (It’s All Gone Pete Tong) graduated from the program with his short film, 237.”

“CBC recognizes the importance of NSI Drama Prize in training next generation content creators for Canadian film and television,” said Kirstine Layfield, Executive Director, Network Programming, CBC English Television. “We are pleased to be extending our support of this program into its 2007/2008 season.”

Up to five Canadian filmmaking teams will be selected to receive $9,500 in cash, over $16,000 in services, a national broadcast license from CBC Television and a world premiere screening. The program also provides customized training in writing, directing and producing, mentoring from established filmmakers and access to professional contacts.

2006 Genie Award nominee Noise by writer-director Greg Spottiswood and producer Jason Charters from Ontario (NSI Drama Prize 2004) recently added the Bravo!FACT Award for Best Canadian Short Film from the Canadian Film Centre’s Worldwide Short Film Festival to its ever-growing list of accolades. Noise will be broadcast on CBC Canadian Reflections in September 2006.

Since the program began in 1991, many NSI Drama Prize films have picked up industry awards and screened at some of the world’s most respected festivals including the Clermont Ferrand Short Film Festival, the Vancouver International Film Festival, World of Comedy International Film Festival in Toronto, the Arizona International Film Festival and Festival International du Court métrage d’Abidjan in the Ivory Coast.

Applications for NSI Drama Prize must be received by Monday, October 16, 2006, 4:30 p.m. Central Time.
