What is NSI Aboriginal Journalism?

  • Full-time, 12-week training program for Aboriginal people pursuing a career in journalism (on-line, radio or TV).
  • Provides participants with skills required for effective reporting in Winnipeg and Canada’s newsrooms.
  • Participants must reside in Winnipeg for the duration of the program.
  • Phase one is eight weeks long, includes three days per week of classroom/workshop based training, remaining two days will be spent in a newsroom setting.
  • Phase Two is a four week industry internship with a broadcast media organization.
  • Program objective is to train participants to be job ready and armed with the tools needed for a successful career in journalism – radio, television or on-line journalism.
  • Training is delivered by senior industry experts.

Who leads the NSI Aboriginal Journalism training program?

Brandice Vivier and Ursula Lawson are the Program Managers. Neil Coligan is the Program Advisor.

How is the training provided?

It is a 12 week, full-time training program that takes place in Winnipeg, broken out as follows:

Phase One - (eight weeks):
Three days per week spent in classroom and workshop environments where experts will share their experiences with students.  Topics will include journalism principles, research techniques, critical thinking, pitching stories, on-line journalism, journalism law, social media, job preparedness and more.  The remaining two days per week will be spent in a broadcast newsroom setting.

Phase Two - internship (four weeks):
Participants who successfully complete phase one will be placed on a four week internship with a broadcast media organization.
