Personal statement
Director Graeme Lynch says:
"Childhood innocence and magic are at the core of this story, one character having it, the other having lost it. This is a story about the joy and naivety reserved for the very young, versus the rigidity and formality that naturally comes with age and experience. This dichotomy is what initially attracted me to the project and I am delighted in the way the journey ultimately unfolded.
The film was intentionally shot in the spring, a period of seasonal transition that mirrors the narrative of the story. At the core of the story is the grandmother’s house, the sole location of the film. I knew that that this abode would become a de facto lead character, and therefore the perfect location was of paramount importance. The soul-less Victorian house we found, situated across from a pond no less, gave me the stark contrast I was searching for – the perfect foil to the restless soul of the child now residing there.
I was very conscious of the lighting schemes I needed illustrate the nature of this struggle within the house. The use heavy artificial light inside the house depicts a manufactured, cold, harsh, light, which served as the antithesis to the natural light that spilled onto the staircase from outside - the perfect setting for the magical appearance of a ghost.
We have assembled a strong team and an award-winning cast, featuring Mark Lutz, Polly Shannon and Anna Mackay-Smith in the pivotal part of the Grandmother. Newcomer Sophi Knight was our God-send. Her exuberance, precociousness, and childhood delight shines on every frame of her performance."
