Personal statement

Director Massimo Amici says:

"Once we read about heroes and gods, and when the movies were invented, we began to watch movies that dealt with similar myths. Grandness was always a part of entertainment which was often a form of culture. Slowly, TV and cinema started dealing with normal people’s intimate essence, which is important nevertheless, perhaps more than watching Superman at times.

This, because there was always an element of extraordinary within the simplest, quietest story. Reality TV, along with other modern entertainment formats, is the end of the extraordinary. It’s as if authors and producers ran out of ideas, or realized that it’s easier and cheaper to produce entertainment which doesn’t require so much thought in terms of structure or content.

And this is the exact effect that such entertainment has on the watcher. There is no longer the need to reach for the stars, or to think hard about something or to want to change everything and live a new life, to reinvent, to grow. Because we are taught that if any ordinary guy on TV can be famous, so can we.

We don’t need to develop anything except for the courage to steal the scene. The normality of how we are is enough, so we don’t need to look for a hero in our lives. We don’t need to look for love at first sight, nor for magic or sudden changes which change us."
