I wouldn’t be a responsible short film columnist if I didn’t fold exciting news of the recent Gemini nods for digital media into my reporting. Kind of cool last week to see our nation’s television awards recognize series created specifically for the web.
Nominated for the first time this year were:
Best Original Program or Series produced for Digital Media - Fiction
- The Vetala (Jove Digital) by producers: Damon Vignale, Peter Scarth, Jon Funk
Best Original Program or Series produced for Digital Media - Non-Fiction
- Waterlife (National Film Board) by producers: Kevin McMahon, Adrian Belina, Gelareh Darabi, Tammy Everts, Brendan Good, Mikko Haapoja, Spencer Hall, Mark McQuillan, Aaron Morris, Steph Pigott, Pablo Vio
Considering the emergence of the Canada Media Fund (CMF) and the focus on digital components for every project made on Canadian television now, I’m guessing that the creation of award-worthy digital content will be a regular part of Canadian entertainment.
When you consider just how many hungry, prolific filmmakers exist in a country where funding is few and far between and commercial success is fleeting, it just seems that web series are the answer.
European filmmakers are a few years ahead of us in this regard as they’ve been producing some awe-inspiring web series like Sweden’s The Truth About Marika for awhile. We’re catching up, however, and this year’s Gemini nominations are going a long way in encouraging more.
Congratulations nominees!
