Go see Amreeka!

I had the pleasure of a sneak peek screening of Amreeka on Monday.

We’ve been posting information about the film on the National Screen Institute website since its world premiere at Sundance and award-winning Cannes experience.

Co-producer Liz Jarvis is a grad of our NSI Features First training program and is also program manager of Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program. We're so proud of her!

Long before I saw Amreeka, what really caught my eye were the publicity shots of actress Nisreen Faour (who plays Muna) who moves with her son from the West Bank to Illinois. Her face tells the story – hope, fear, joy, naivety, sadness, strength and love.

Writer/director Cherien Dabis’ feature film debut is a winner. The script is smart, acting superb, locations amazing, and the soundtrack is glorious.

This is a story about relationships, but not just within the extended family – relationships between classmates, between people of different cultural backgrounds, teachers and students, teachers and parents, co-workers, law-enforcement…

Go see it. It opens in Toronto (Cumberland), Montreal (AMC Forum, Latin Quarter (French)), Vancouver (Fifth Avenue) and Winnipeg (Grant Park) October 30, and more cities in the coming weeks.
