Andre Gide said that a person cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.
The journey of my career development so far has been a very exciting, at times intimidating and serendipitous experience. I've had just as many doors closed on my face as I’ve had opened up. The end result is that I'm farther ahead in my career plan than I thought I could be – and I've learned some very important lessons along the way.
I’d like to share what I’ve learned with you.
Since my humble days 18 years ago as a poverty-stricken freelance artist I've had the pleasure of working for independent production companies, mid-sized non-profit entities and large publicly traded media corporations.
Since earning my MBA, I’ve enjoyed working on film, television, publishing and digital new media projects. Luck and opportunity has rewarded me with responsibilities in production, legal, finance and strategy positions.
But this blog isn't about my resume, it's about why – and how - those doors opened and closed.
This blog will focus on the nuances of career development in media (be it freelance film production or a 9-5 media office job). I’ll suggest pragmatic job seeking tactics and innovative strategies. I'll also touch on the emotional and psychological preparation needed to face the fact that if you want it badly enough then you deserve a rewarding and exciting career in this very exhilarating industry.
There’s lots of information our there from seasoned executive recruiters and HR specialists. This blog is not about expert advice – rather, it's the view point of a developing professional like you. I’m pounding the pavement and fighting hard to nurture my skills to support an accomplished and sustaining career. One which is fueled by the thrill and intensity found at the core of our media industry.
My hope is that this blog might help educate new comers, give a nudge to the malcontented and evoke discussion and idea generation for innovative career strategies.
The lifeblood and DNA of Canadian media is every single professional who is contributing to our industry. As new colleagues join our ranks or seasoned professionals enhance their skills our media world evolves and flourishes.
