Personal statement
Director Nicholas Humphries says:
"In the summer of 2008 I shot a short film entitled Don’t Call Me Zombie, currently in post production. A week before we went to camera, we lost both a location and a supporting actor in one day. The writer said that he knew this guy Stephen LeBail, that he would be great for the part and let us use his backyard to shoot a barbecue scene.
He blew the role out of the park. So much so that in the final edit, we nearly doubled his screen time, as he found silent nuances in the character that we, in the editing room, were convinced improved the quality of the piece. So I knew that I wanted to work with him again in a larger way.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hunting for a script to cast Stephen in when I was given
A Great Day for Death. AGDFD, or Grim, as we’ve affectionately come to call it,
explores what might happen if we annoying mortals would just let the Reaper take a
vacation and was created courtesy of Portfolio Shorts, an initiative of the Vancouver
Film School Writing Department to have student scripts made by experienced
directors in under 4 hours.
It also gave me the opportunity to work with Bob Woolsey, Juan Riedinger, Aaron
Brooks and April Green, a collection of my favorite young, Vancouver actors, all in
one shoot. It was a scary good time"
