The National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) today announced CBC as the new title, presenting and tuition sponsor of NSI New Voices, now known as CBC New Indigenous Voices presented by NSI. CBC has confirmed a three-year commitment as title sponsor of the program.
“CBC is thrilled to be the title sponsor of this vital training program that has 12 years of success behind it,” said Sally Catto, general manager of programming, CBC. “With 109 course graduates, many of whom have continued working in the industry, this partnership is a significant part of our ongoing commitment to Indigenous storytellers.”
“We are delighted to be partnering with CBC,” said John Gill, CEO of NSI. “Their passion for and proven track record of supporting emerging artists will greatly enhance the work we do with young, Indigenous students.”
CBC New Indigenous Voices presented by NSI is a culturally-sensitive training course that exposes young Indigenous people aged 18 to 35 to a variety of creative and challenging employment opportunities in film, TV and digital media. The course is led by program manager Ursula Lawson with Indigenous programs & administrative assistant Kaya Wheeler and NSI Indigenous training programs advisor Lisa Meeches.
Workshops and seminars in the classroom phase are led by industry experts. Students intern with a broadcaster or independent production company giving them firsthand knowledge of the business. Training also includes the production and screening of three short films. Minimum wage is provided throughout the course. 73% of graduates are working in the arts sector or pursuing further related education.
