He wanted to go to film school. But when he set about gathering the money to make it happen, his life became a film.
This short documentary details the meteoric rise and subsequent fall of a young Canadian entrepreneur in London.
Director: Duncan McDowall
Producer: Before the Wire
This is an unusual project: a short doc whose subject almost seems cast. But I assure you he’s not and it’s a true story.
The biggest challenge was deciding what to leave in and what to leave out since there was so much compelling material to choose from.
What I aimed for here was a contrast between the hardened life of organized crime and jail, and the sensual world of massage therapy. I love those oppositions, and this story had it in spades.
Don was a gem to work with – he’s basically born to be in front of the camera – and this film is entirely due to his charisma and, of course, his story.
I hope it’s as fun to watch as it was for me to piece together.
