Students announced for NSI Lifestyle & Reality Series Producer course

The National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) announces students for the second year of its NSI Lifestyle & Reality Series Producer course.

The course was created in response to the need for more factual and lifestyle series producers in Canada and provides advanced training focused on the skills required to fulfill this role. It ran for the first time in 2012 and its popularity shows no signs of waning – the NSI Lifestyle & Reality Series Producer course will train 13 series producers in just two years.

A week-long customized bootcamp starts November 4 and is followed by a practical eight-week apprenticeship on an existing lifestyle series green-lit by one of the NSI Lifestyle & Reality Series Producer Program Partners: Shaw Media, Bell Media and Corus Entertainment.

Like its first run last year, the course is fully funded by the production community, which speaks to its relevance and industry demand.

Sam Linton (Urban Legends, Ice Pilots, Secret History, Mother of the Bride) and Allan Novak (Kids in the Hall, The Newsroom, Canada’s Next Top Model, Recipe to Riches) are the program advisors and Brandice Vivier (NSI Totally TelevisionNSI Features First) is the program manager.

“We’re excited to have Sam Linton and Allan Novak on board for the course this year,” said Brandice Vivier, senior program manager at NSI. “Allan is at the forefront of where the unscripted industry is heading. Sam has worked on both sides – as a broadcaster and producer – and together Sam and Allan understand and offer training that comprises the best of both worlds.”

Students will connect with top lifestyle series producers, network executives, production executives and other industry leaders to round out their knowledge base and industry contacts.

Last year’s participants were mentored on the shows Property Brothers, Yukon Gold, Mother of the Bride, Love It or List It, Chef Michael’s Kitchen and Decked Out.

This year’s participating production companies and their nominated students are:

  • Proper Television, Meredith Veats
  • Temple Street Productions, Veronica Saluzzi
  • Cineflix Productions, JD Scott
  • Buck Productions, Andrew Murray
  • Peace Point Entertainment, Sylvie Brownlow
  • Peacock Alley Entertainment, Ryan Valentini
