To mark the introduction of the shiny new Shaw Media Fearless Female Director Award in the NSI Online Short Film Festival (thank you Shaw Media!) we’ve programmed a month of our favourite films from female directors.
From this point forward, all films by a female director that we accept into the festival will be considered for the $2,500 quarterly prize.
For your pleasure and inspiration we’ve put together a program of 10 short films from our festival archives, directed by some very talented ladies.
The industry needs more of you!
And if you’re a female director with a brilliant short film, we want to see it. We’re currently accepting film submissions for the NSI Online Short Film Festival until May 17, 2012, 4:30 p.m.
Each week for the next month we’ll be highlighting two brilliant short films by female directors.
We kick off Shaw Media Fearless Female Director Month with two very different films.
Patricia Chica’s Day Before Yesterday is a searing drama about a woman who claims not to remember anything about her past.
And by contrast, Sheona MacDonald’s feel-good film Momentum uses live action and animation to illustrate the relationship between a grandfather and his granddaughter from the beginning of her life to the end of his.
Sheona (also an NSI grad) was one of 16 Canadian filmmakers selected to create a short film (Momentum) for the Olympics.
The rest of the month’s lineup looks like this:
APRIL 9
Danishka Esterhazy - The Red Hood
Sophie Jarvis - Margaret and the Dollhouse
APRIL 16
Liane Balaban, Vanessa Matsui & Jenna Wright - Johanna
Michelle Nolden - Loonie
APRIL 23
Talia Pura - The Strawberry Confession
Laura Cassis - The Conversation
APRIL 30
Tracy D. Smith - Curse of the Jade Falcon
A. Megan Turnbull - Evolucity
